History in Camp Springs

Camp Springs is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in Prince George’s County, Maryland (MD), United States. The population was 22,734 at the 2020 census. Camp Springs is not an official post office designation; the area is divided among the surrounding mailing addresses of Temple Hills, Fort Washington, Clinton, and Suitland.

Camp Springs, MD, was settled in the mid-19th century as “Allentown,” named for the Allen family, but became known as Camp Springs due to its springs, a popular camping spot for soldiers traveling to Fort Meade. The area saw significant growth in the 1940s with the establishment of the Camp Springs Army Air Field, now Joint Base Andrews, which led to a housing shortage and residential development. Today, it is a major community in Prince George’s County, home base of the Air Force Systems Command and the official presidential airplane, Air Force One.

Camp Springs is also home to other government agencies, hotels, restaurants, senior citizen’s center, small businesses, Allentown splash tennis & fitness park, and the Washington Metro Branch Avenue Station. We are a ten-minute drive to the National Harbor, where you can dine and shop.

On your scenic drive through Camp Springs, you will notice mostly single-family homes as a backdrop to tree-lined streets and well-manicured lawns. There are numerous churches including the more than 100-year-old Bells Methodist Church on Allentown Road. It is the oldest building in Camp Springs built in 1910. The many civic-minded residents of Camp Springs invite you to visit and enjoy. Everyday we’re building a better community.
