Resources for Parents and Students

A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER

I hope you and your family are staying healthy and safe during this trying time. Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon announced that schools in our state will be closed for the remainder of the academic year. Students will still complete their coursework virtually, and online instruction will continue. I know this news presents challenges to many families in the Fifth District, but it’s important to listen to our public health officials and take every necessary precaution to keep our children, our families, and our communities safe and healthy.

Despite schools being physically closed, meals are still available to students. Click here to find a meal distribution site near you. Parents and guardians are able to pick up student meals without the student present.

Additional information is available from each of the five school districts in the Fifth District:

I know that distance learning can be challenging for parents and students alike. The Smithsonian Learning Lab has many great resources for teachers and parents, including lesson plans and activities and access to millions of digital resources. Click here to explore the Smithsonian Learning Lab.

Additionally, the Library of Congress has extensive online resources for teachers. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. ET, Library of Congress education specialists are available to answer questions and discuss lesson topics. Click here for more information.

My staff and I are working around the clock to assist Fifth District residents during this public health crisis. If you need assistance, please visit my website at https://hoyer.house.gov/ or call one of my district offices. If you live in Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, or Calvert Counties, please call (301) 474-0119. If you live in Charles or St. Mary’s Counties, please call (301) 843-1577.

As always, I encourage all Fifth District residents to continue to share their concerns and insights with me by contacting my office or connecting with me on FacebookTwitter, or Instagram.

Sincerely Yours,

PGCPS to Hold eGraduation Celebration featuring Taraji P. Henson

PGCPS Announcements - Anuncios

Dear Prince George’s County Public Schools Community,

I receive emails daily about ways to provide our high school seniors with a celebration worthy of their accomplishments during these unprecedented times. Today, I am excited to announce a system-wide virtual graduation celebration in their honor, featuring Academy Award-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson as the commencement speaker!

The eGraduation Celebration will pay tribute to our estimated 8,000 seniors at 31 traditional, public charter and alternative high schools. Ms. Henson is a 1988 Oxon Hill High School graduate. Other prominent alums are on board for the celebration including R&B singer Kenny Lattimore, a PGCPS Alumni Hall of Fame inductee; radio host/comedian Joe Clair; NFL cornerback Joe Haden and local news anchor Taylor Thomas. More surprises are in store when it airs Saturday, May 30 on WJLA 24/7 News (Comcast 808, FiOS 508, DirecTV/Dish 8) and Sunday, May 31 on ABC7.

I know this is not the same as walking across the stage on graduation day. I am working with the Board of Education to give our students that moment once these restrictions are lifted. Until then, I want them to feel our PGCPS pride in their accomplishments, the unstoppable Class of 2020.

Sincerely,

Monica Goldson, Ed.D.
Chief Executive Officer

Cordialement,

Monica Goldson, Ed.D.
Directrice exécutive
