Show Your Commitment to Prince George’s County by Completing Your 2020 Census Today

Dear Prince Georgians:

The news of this pandemic has been truly overwhelming. These past few weeks, we’ve all had to make major adjustments to our daily routines. Here in the County government, we’ve taken every step possible to ensure our residents are served during this challenging time. I’m writing today because now, we need your help. Today, April 1, is National Census Day, and we need every Prince Georgian to complete their Census.

The Census is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to accurately count the number of people in our County. Data collected during the Census is used to determined how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding are distributed each year. Unfortunately, in 2010, we experienced an undercount of our residents, the highest undercount in the State of Maryland. Because of that, we’ve missed out on approximately $363 million in federal funding since 2010 that could have gone to our schools, our roads, our hospitals, and so much more.

In light of the current pandemic, this funding takes on a whole new level of importance. We expect COVID-19 to have a major economic impact on our County, including our budget. We need every dollar we rightfully deserve in federal funding, to ensure we have the resources we need to rebuild after this crisis ends.

While you’re at home practicing social distancing, looking after your loved ones, and checking in on your relatives, don’t forget to fill out your Census. It’s the only way that Prince George’s County will get the funding that we rightfully deserve from the federal government to adequately recover from this crisis. It’s also the only way we will get the federal funding we rightfully deserve for our schools, our infrastructure, our seniors, and so much more over the next 10 years to continue moving our County forward. 

I know Prince George’s County and I know the people who live here. Over the last few weeks, I’ve seen what I’ve known to be true my entire life, that Prince Georgians are capable of great things. Filling out the Census is just another small way to show our compassion and commitment to this community that we are proud to call home.

I know that by working together, we can show our region, State and nation that Prince Georgians are “Prince George’s Proud” and “Proud to be Counted” in the 2020 Census.

La noticia de esta pandemia ha sido realmente abrumadora. En las últimas semanas, todos hemos tenido que hacer ajustes importantes a nuestras rutinas diarias. Aquí en el gobierno del Condado, hemos tomado todas las medidas posibles para garantizar que nuestros residentes reciban servicios durante este momento difícil. Hoy, escribo porque ahora necesitamos su ayuda. Hoy, 1 de abril, es el Día Nacional del Censo, y necesitamos que cada príncipe georgiano complete su Censo.

El Censo es una oportunidad única en una década para contar con precisión la cantidad de personas en nuestro Condado. Los datos recopilados durante el Censo se utilizan para determinar cómo se distribuyen cientos de miles de millones de dólares en fondos federales cada año. Desafortunadamente, en 2010, experimentamos un recuento insuficiente de nuestros residentes, el recuento más bajo en el estado de Maryland. Debido a eso, hemos perdido aproximadamente $ 363 millones en fondos federales desde 2010 que podrían haberse destinado a nuestras escuelas, nuestras carreteras, nuestros hospitales y mucho más.

A la luz de la pandemia actual, estos fondos adquieren un nuevo nivel de importancia. Esperamos que COVID-19 tenga un gran impacto económico en nuestro Condado, incluido nuestro presupuesto. Necesitamos cada dólar que merecemos legítimamente en fondos federales, para asegurarnos de tener los recursos que necesitamos para reconstruir después de que termine esta crisis.

Es la única forma en que el Condado de Prince George obtendrá el financiamiento que legítimamente merecemos del gobierno federal para recuperarse adecuadamente de esta crisis. También es la única forma en que obtendremos los fondos federales que merecemos legítimamente para nuestras escuelas, nuestra infraestructura, nuestros adultos mayores y mucho más en los próximos 10 años para continuar avanzando en nuestro Condado.

Conozco el Condado de Prince George y conozco a las personas que viven aquí. En las últimas semanas, he visto lo que he sabido que es verdad toda mi vida, que el príncipe georgiano es capaz de hacer grandes cosas. Completar el Censo es solo otra pequeña forma de mostrar nuestra compasión y compromiso con esta comunidad que estamos orgullosos de llamar hogar.
