Back on track
I’m really excited to tell you about a new diversion program my office has launched to help young, nonviolent offenders get back on track. This program is patterned after one that Attorney General Kamala Harris developed in California and I hope to replicate its success in Prince George’s County.
Back on Track Prince George’s County will give defendants, ages 18 to 26 charged with distribution of illegal drugs who did not possess a weapon and had no prior felonies, the option to make amends with the community instead of going to prison. These young people will be able to enroll in a rigorous 12-18 month program that will include community service, life skills development, and workforce training. Upon completion of the program, they will receive job placement and a clean record!
This program will do good – there’s no doubt about it.
If you would like to help make it a success, you can donate new or dry-cleaned, gently worn suits for young men and women. Our Back on Track partner Prince George’s Community College will collect the suits in Annex C of the PGCC Campus. For more information on donating, please contact Ms. Rhonda Walker at walkerrv@pgcc.edu.
In addition, we are looking for mentors who will partner with participants of the program after they have completed the program’s requirements. If you are interested in learning more about how to become a mentor, please contact Karen McNeal with Catholic Charities at karen.mcneal@catholiccharitiesdc.org.
Thank you,
Angela
