To the Family of Joan Law

The Camp Springs Civic Association expresses its deepest sympathies and condolences to Joan’s family. Joan was a well-respected and dedicated member of the Camp Springs Civic Association Board for many years.  She served as Chairperson of the Community Affairs Committee, and with her determined work ethic and commitment, accomplished many victories for our community.

Joan kept a watchful eye on Camp Springs to ensure that the county enforced its own property standards. Instead of complaining, Joan jumped into action by taking photos of areas where people dumped trash and of properties that were not being properly cared for. She sent documentation to the county until the problems were resolved. She attended hearings and volunteered for numerous community activities including the annual National Night Out, neighborhood clean ups, and the Camp Springs Boys & Girls Club Parade. Joan was also an active member of the District V Citizens Advisory Council where she represented the Camp Spring Civic Association.  Wherever Joan was asked to serve, she complied.

Today we lost a true community activist. We will miss our colleague and friend. We will miss Joan’s beautiful smile, quiet spirit, strength and determination that she held onto until the very end. In the words of Emily Dickenson, “Because I could not stop for death, he kindly stopped for me. The carriage held but just ourselves and immortality.”

May God Bless You All.

Water Emergency Averted

But Mandatory Water Restrictions Must Continue

The water emergency in southern Prince George’s County has been averted. Late last night, dedicated WSSC workers “unfroze” and closed a key valve near the failing pipe.  This greatly reduced the amount of pipeline that had to be shut down to make repairs to the failing 54-inch Forestville pipe.  This means if customers continue to conserve, WSSC will be able to repair the failing pipe with no disruption in service.

“If we continue to conserve, I am confident the system will remain full while we complete repairs,” said Jerry N. Johnson, WSSC General Manager/CEO. “I want to thank our customers who have done a terrific job of conserving, Prince George’s County officials for their efforts, and to thank our employees who wouldn’t give up on a troublesome valve.”

Earlier efforts to close this valve failed, forcing WSSC to move to another valve much farther away, creating the potential for a large water outage in portions Prince George’s County. The hard work of our crews headed off the emergency.
After the valve was closed successfully, we proceeded to isolate the pipe and began repairs this morning.  We anticipate the pipe will be back in service in two or three days if nothing unexpected happens – with no disruption in service to customers.

WSSC appreciates the patience of its customers and the assistance of Prince George’s County officials during this difficult period.
